Imagine an industrial underbelly, a forest of pipes, gears, and nameless gadgets. Reach back across time to a quaint but clattering world of factories and locomotive whirlygigs, zeppelins, and wooden submarines with red velvet interiors. If Jules Verne or H.G. Wells come to mind, you’re not far off, as what may seem to describe a 19th century flight of fancy has actually exploded into a present day movement all its own: Steampunk.

Beginning in the 1980s as both a literary and aesthetic movement, Steampunk has been conjured imaginatively by fantasy writers like James Blaylock , author of the novels Homunculus and The Affair of the Chalk Cliffs, and materially by engineering wizards like Jake Von Slatt who has built mind-boggling Steampunk cars piece by reusable piece, and modified (or “modded” as it’s come to be known) everything from school busses to Ipods, PCs to guitar amps, and table lamps to more practical items like shop respirators.

The “steam” in Steampunk describes a tendency toward modernity as it was envisioned back in a gear-driven, steam-powered industrial revolution, while the “punk” tag denotes the movement’s more updated, almost post-apocalyptic Road Warrior vibe that is softened by Victorian ornamental stylings.

More than just a world of books and objects, Steampunk is a lifestyle. From fancier to fanatic, Steampunks extend the aesthetic to personal fashion statement. Combat boots are worn along with vintage corsets and bustiers dyed in goth-like hues, while rail worker coveralls are paired with top hats. I particularly love designing handmade jewelry using the very textures I find all around me such as palm bark, grasses and raffia. I also delight in the look of reticulated, fused and melted metals which you will find in much of my work.

This stunning modern handcrafted artisan jewelry geometric necklace is created with a single, pure white freshwater coin pearl surrounded by an organic textured half moon of sterling silver. This designer jewelry necklace is centered on a dainty, sterling silver chain with spring clasp closure. The sterling silver half moon has a black patina in the texture crevices to highlight the dramatic, organic markings. While the term itself is full of mystery, you've probably been known the style of Steampunk longer than you realize. Popular video game "BioShock." is all about it. The feature film "Golden Compass" has it. Even famous literary novels Homunculus and The Affair of the Chalk Cliffs by Jules Verne and H.G. Wells are heavily influenced by Steampunk.

Steampunk simply brings back to life the late 19th century Victorian Era.

Mixed with a twist of a world powered by steam and time travel, its a concept and a style, its its own identity!

California Handmade Jewelry Designer Creates One Of A Kind Eclectic, Asymmetrical Styled Jewelry

Featured jewelry designer Holly Louen creates unique high quality handmade jewelry. For the person who appreciates the one-of-a-kind and unusual, this is the gallery for you. Holly has always enjoyed being creative and this creativity shows most in her jewelry designs.

It all began with a trip to Murano, Italy. After touring the glass and bead factories on this island, she was hooked. Upon returning home, she promptly signed up for a Lampwork class at the local glass store to learn how to make her own beautiful beads.

She then taught her teenage son how to do it, and that became a great bonding time for them. After numerous mistakes and many successful beads later, Holly decided to start incorporating them into her jewelry designs.

She loves to work with color and texture, Swarovski Crystal and the natural beauty of Semi Precious Gemstones. Many of her pieces have an eclectic, asymmetrical style.

This lovely necklace has a beautiful mix of Turquoise, Moonstone and Kyanite gemstones with a deep red fire polish crystal and silver chain. At the front is a 1" silver flower pendant. How to Clean Your Sterling Silver Jewelry

Many people have asked me how to clean their handmade silver jewelry. While there are many cleaning products out there, many are chemicals and are too caustic for the silver. Sterling silver does oxidize with time and will eventually tarnish. Some people have very acidic oils in their skin and this can cause silver jewelry to tarnish very quickly. I recommend using a sunshine polishing cloth to clean your jewelry. It’s gentle and does a good job in removing tarnish. Some people like to use the jewelry dips to clean jewelry but I adamantly do not recommend using these products because they will remove the darkening agent I use to darken the words or designs that have been stamped into the metal.

Believe it or not, but by wearing your jewelry daily, will help keep your jewelry bright and shiny (even if worn in the shower)! I wore a bracelet for 3 years straight never removing it for bedtime or showers and it never tarnished! I notice jewelry that sits especially uncovered and exposed to air will in time tarnish. Jewelry that is exposed to moisture will also hasten oxidation.

Please remember to never do house hold chores and clean with bleach while wearing your jewelry. Bleach will not only stain your jewelry, but no amount of polishing with a sunshine cloth will remove the stains.

Here’s a great tip for cleaning chains only that have oxidized and are beyond the power of the polishing cloth. You will need:

A small pot lined with foil.

Add: 2-3 inches of water

1 tsp. of salt

1 tsp. of baking soda

bring to a boil, add chains making sure they are covered with solution, boil for another minute or two and remove from heat. Using caution, remove chains, rinse, dry and buff with a soft cloth. Your chains should be bright and shiny!

Texas Handmade Jewelry Designer Michael Thornton Turns Metal and Stone Into Wearable Works of Art

Michael Thornton is a jewelry designer from the mid size town of Katy, Texas. His college work was at the University of Houston where his major was English and his minor was art. He first learned of jewelry construction in an art class consisting of design and building techniques, but he did not pursue the art until many years later.

After suffering a heart attack and subsequent triple bypass surgery, he had to slow down his life and find a less stressful occupation. Jewelry construction fit the need for less stress. Michael chose to work with wire as his primary medium, turning a length of wire into a wearable work of art was truly rewarding to him.

Michael has been a wire artist for about three years. He works with large gemstones because he found that few wire jewelry designers were willing to deal with faceted stones. Michael sets the stones in simple yet elegant gold or silver wire frames. As for his chain maille, Michael makes use of Gold, Silver, Copper, and base metal to create earrings, bracelets, and necklaces, sometimes utilizing thousands of rings to form his silky smooth works of art.

Jewelry Designer Andrew Stoffel Specializes in Turning Coins into Wearable Art

Ever take a close look into the ever changing artwork put on currency throughout the world? Featured jewelry designer Andrew Stoffel most definitely has.

Andy is a student of Pastoral Studies in Northern California. He has worked with youth and young adults for several years now and has a passion to see them grow as individuals with strong character.

Andy has used his love and talent for music and art to work with and inspire young people. His ultimate goal is to complete school and open a youth center that concentrates on music and the arts. His continuing education will include teaching credentials and a master’s degree in counseling psychology or business administration (with an emphasis on non-profit organizations).

Andy has been making jewelry for friends and family for many years now and has learned how to make much of what he does by trial and error. There is never a problem that doesn’t have a solution and many times the journey leads to many other inspiring ideas. A few years ago Andy’s father began to talk about making double sided silver coin rings using old silver coins.

Coin Ring, 1921 Morgan Silver Dollar, Polished Finish
1921 Morgan Silver Dollar coin ring with a polished silver finish, Size 14 1/2. This ring is "Reversed" with the date on the inner band. "United States Of America", "One Dollar" and "In God We Trust" can be seen on the outer band. The Date and "E Pluribus Unum" can be seen on the inner band. This coin was minted from 1878 - 1921 and is .900 silver.

For those who prefer the color of gold, but not the cost, the etched NuGold Cuff is a handsome find. Made of NuGold and sterling, this cuff is a bi-color standout. NuGold is an alloy (type) of brass that has been specially formulated for jewelry. It has a richer, warmer color than most other brass alloys, and most importantly, it contains NO nickel, which many people are allergic to. It offers that rich golden color without the very high cost of gold. Barbara's etching work begins with a picture she has drawn or a photograph she's taken. The metal is treated by fusing a photosensitive film onto it, and then the selected image is imprinted on the film by exposing it to ultraviolet light. The metal with the imprinted image is then developed in a basic solution. After this, the metal is floated onto an aerated bath of ferric chloride. The Process of Metal Etching
The etching of metal is a multi-stepped process which imparts texture to the metal. Etching is most often done on metal before it is made into an object. My etching work begins with a picture I’ve drawn or a photograph I’ve taken. The metal is treated by fusing a photosensitive film onto it, and then the selected image is imprinted on the film by exposing it to ultraviolet light. The metal with the imprinted image is then developed in a basic solution.
